The last and final lecture was about organization and standard Maintained in NICU which was explained by Dr. Ashish Shah,pediatrician at sparsh hospital.
The explained about the how the NICU shold be organized.the have explain some criteria about the organization Of NICU.

WHAT IS NICU ?

  • A NICU is an intensie care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants.

AIM OF NICU :

  • Reducing the neonatal mortalit and improving the quality of life among the survivors.

WHO NEED NICU CARE?

  • Pre-term
  • Low birth weight child
  • baby with infection& sepsis
  • Disease
  • Term baby with respiratory, cardiac, metabolic disorder
  • Congenital malformation
  • Surgical emergencies

GRADE OF NEONATAL CARE :

  • LEVEL 1:
    • Baby with birth weight more than 1800gm and birth after 34 weeks normal neonatal care.
  • LEVEL 2:
    • Baby with birth weight between 1200-1800gm and birth between 30-34 weeks special care nursery.
  • LEVEL 3:
    • Baby with birth weight Less than 1200 and birth Less than 30 weeks.

SPACE :

  • Each infant should be proioded with a minimum area of 100 sq. ft or 10 m2
  • Space for promotion of braest feed.
  • NICU should have minimum 8 beds.
  • Located as close possible to thelabour room and obstetric operation theatre.

ROOMS :

  • Baby care area
  • Hand washing and grooming room
  • Examination area
  • Mother area
  • Nurses station
  • Cleaned utility and soiled utility room
  • Ventilation
  • Proper lighting

EQUIPMENTS :

  • Resuscitation equipment
  • Bag and mask resuscitator
  • Oxygen and suction facility
  • Catheter, syring and needles
  • Feeding equipments
  • Laminar flow system
  • Weighting machine
  • Incubator
  • Radiant heat warmer
  • Thermometer
  • Oxygen analyzer
  • Phototherapy unit
  • Heartrate monitor
  • Blood pressure monitor
  • Infusion pump
  • Pulse oximeter,etc.

NURSE PATIENT RATIO IN NICU:

  • UNIERSALLY
    • For critical baby 1:1
    • For stable baby 1:3
  • In INDIA
    • RATIO 1:4
