As part of the community health nursing clinical posting, the 4th Year B.Sc. Nursing students organized an ORS Day celebration at the Sandhiyer & Olpad Village Health Center to raise awareness about the prevention and management of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases. The main objective of the program was to educate the community on the importance of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), promote healthy hygiene practices, and encourage the prevention of dehydration caused by diarrhoeal illnesses.
“Hydration is a key to a healthier tomorrow”
The program began with a health education session in which the students explained the causes, signs and symptoms, prevention, and management of diarrhoea. They emphasized the importance of hand washing with soap, consuming safe drinking water, maintaining proper sanitation, practicing food hygiene, and seeking timely medical care. The students also highlighted the importance of continuing breastfeeding and adequate fluid intake during episodes of diarrhoea to prevent dehydration.
To reinforce the health messages, the students performed a street drama depicting the causes and prevention of diarrhoea and demonstrating the life-saving role of ORS. The drama effectively communicated the need for good personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, and early use of ORS whenever diarrhoea occurs. An ORS preparation and administration demonstration was also conducted, during which the students explained the correct method of preparing ORS solution and its proper use in preventing dehydration.
As part of the outreach activities, the students conducted home visits in Sandhiyer village and distributed educational booklets on the prevention of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases. During these visits, they educated families about safe drinking water, proper hand hygiene, food safety, environmental cleanliness,
sanitation, and waste disposal. Community members were encouraged to adopt healthy practices and were given the opportunity to clarify their doubts regarding diarrhoea prevention and the appropriate use of ORS.
The villagers actively participated in all the activities and appreciated the efforts of the students in providing practical and easy-to-understand health education. The ORS Day celebration was successful in increasing community awareness about diarrhoea prevention, the importance of ORS, and measures to prevent waterborne
diseases. The program also provided valuable practical experience to the 4th Year B.Sc. Nursing students by enhancing their communication, teaching, and community health nursing skills while strengthening their commitment to health promotion and disease prevention.
